There’s something special about

Life Under Canvas

Every summer, The Boathouse Youth swaps youth centre walls for open fields, campfires, canvas tents and a completely different kind of adventure.

LIFE UNDER CANVAS

There’s Something Special About Summer Camp

Our Summer Camp gives young people the opportunity to step away from everyday life and spend time together in an environment designed around friendship, adventure, independence and belonging.

For some young people, it is their first night away from home. Their first time sleeping in a tent. Their first campfire. Their first real adventure without their family beside them.

And that is exactly what makes it so powerful.

PURPOSE BEHIND THE FUN

More Than A Week Away

Summer Camp is great fun – but there is real purpose behind everything we do.

Residential youth work creates opportunities that simply cannot be recreated during a few hours at a youth centre.

When young people live, eat, play and adventure alongside one another, relationships become stronger. They learn how to contribute to a community, look after themselves and others, try things they might previously have avoided and discover that they are capable of more than they realised.

Sometimes those moments happen during a big activity. Sometimes while washing dishes after dinner. And sometimes around the campfire, long after the day’s activities have finished.

These are the moments that make camp matter.

Memories That Last

Ask young people about camp months later and they rarely remember the timetable.

They remember the people. Laughing in their tent. Finally succeeding at something they thought they couldn’t do. The ridiculous game after dinner. Sitting around the fire.

They remember feeling part of something.

Those memories matter.

LIFE AT CAMP

Adventure, Community & Belonging

Camp is built around shared experiences: trying new things, taking responsibility and knowing there are trusted adults alongside you.

ADVENTURE ON THE DOORSTEP

Days at camp are full of opportunities to explore, challenge yourself and have fun.

From canoeing and hiking to bushcraft, team challenges and bigger off-site adventures, there’s always something new to experience.

FIND OUT MORE

Days at camp are packed with adventure, but there’s plenty happening back at camp too. Games, creative activities, competitions, talent shows and film nights all give young people time to have fun and spend time with friends.

As evening arrives, camp begins to slow down. The fire is lit, the hot chocolate comes out and everyone gathers together.

Campfire evenings have become one of the defining experiences of a BHY summer – a place for stories, laughter, reflection and some wonderfully questionable singing.

A Community of Our Own

For the duration of camp, we create our own little community.

Young people share tents, eat meals together and take responsibility for looking after the place they’re living in.

FIND OUT MORE

Everyone contributes to life at camp, whether that’s clearing tables, washing up after dinner, keeping tents tidy or looking out for someone who might need a little support.

These everyday responsibilities are an important part of the experience.

They build independence, teamwork and a sense that camp belongs to all of us.

A Place to Belong

The best camps aren’t defined by the activities. They’re defined by the relationships.

Our youth workers live alongside young people throughout camp, creating opportunities for conversation, encouragement, laughter and support.

FIND OUT MORE

Young people have adults around them who know them well, believe in them and are there when they need them.

Camp is designed to be inclusive too, with different accommodation, quieter spaces and additional support helping us respond to individual needs.

Because every young person should have the opportunity to belong.
