As a young leader, you’d have the chance to share your ideas, plan events, and help other young people feel welcome and included. This is a fantastic opportunity not just to develop your leadership skills, but also to make a real impact in our community. Plus, it’ll be a lot of fun!
Your voices are essential in this process. We want to hear your thoughts on what activities you’d like to see, what skills you want to develop, and what issues matter to you. This is your club, and together we can build something amazing!

There are four main sections of a DofE Programme:
Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition.
The Boathouse Youth will facilitate and support you achieving all four sections to ensure you have the best possible chance of achieving your Silver DofE Award. Your Silver DofE Award is the equivalent to a GCSE (in terms of UCAS points) and is looked upon favourably by prospective colleges, universities and employers.
Work towards your Level 2 Award in Youth Work (equivalent to a GCSE).
Find out moreWe start with the Skills Section at The BHY with the Duke of Edinburgh programme launching early January. You will start working towards your Level 2 Award in Youth Work Principles – a formal youth work qualification (which is the equivalent to a GCSE in its own right).
This skill will broaden your understanding and expertise in youth work as you explore topics such as leadership, safeguarding, behaviour management and adolescence. Following this programme you will also become a Young Leader at The BHY, which could lead to employment opportunities when you’re 16.
Volunteer placements for aspiring Young Leaders.
Find out more
Volunteering is simple and great fun. It’s about choosing to give time to help people, the community, society, the environment or animals. The BHY provides volunteer placement opportunities for its aspiring Young Leaders.
You can volunteer as a Young Leader at one of the Infants, Juniors or Junior Plus sessions each week (approx 1.5hrs) for a minimum of 6 months. The Centre Manager or one of the Youth Workers will assess this section for you.
If you would like to complete your Volunteering Section independently of The BHY then please speak to a leader.Â
Choose any sport, dance or fitness activity and build up a sweat!
Find out more
For your physical activity you need to choose any sport, dance or fitness activity – basically, anything that requires a sustained level of energy and physical activity.
You may already be participating in an eligible activity (such as a football club or dance team) but, if not, you can attend our Friday night Games Sessions which are all about building up a sweat and improving your physical fitness levels.
If you would like to complete your Physical Section independently of The BHY then please speak to a leader.
Plan, train for and complete an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition.
Find out more
This is the one everybody talks about! You will need to plan, train for and complete an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition with an agreed aim.
You must do the correct training for your level and mode of travel. This will take place from March to July, but also during a training expedition and practice expedition before your formal qualifier.
If you would like to complete your Expedition Section independently of The BHY then please speak to a leader.
If this sounds like the thing for you, then just fill in the form above to register your interest. We will then contact you with more information.
