What BHY offers

During the school-holidays (and sometimes on special weekends) we like to provide our young members with something a little bit more than our standard provision. In fact, we like to provide them with a lot more. Our Activities & Residential package would be the envy of most Youth Organisations and we are proud of it!

If young people are off-school then you can almost guarantee that The Boathouse Youth will be doing something fun, adventurous and exciting. It could be anything from a day-trip to a Theme Park or Zoo, a weekend Cycling Expedition round the Trough of Bowland or a week spent aboard a Canal Boat or Camping.

As a young person involved in these activities you can expect to learn new skills, expand your dreams and ambitions, and – most importantly – have so much fun!

WHAT IS THE POINT?

Because it’s fun… and when we’re having fun in a safe and controlled environment we learn how to manage risk, personally develop and realise our own potentials. Once you’ve achieved those things – you will soar!

  • PERSONALLY DEVELOP

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

First and foremost – keep your eyes and ears open for notices and letters about our extra-activities. We cannot be held responsible if you miss-out on an Activity or Residential because you haven’t taken home a letter or responded to a Facebook Post. This is your responsibility!

Secondly – places are always limited on our day-trips and holiday experiences. We will make our decision based on a very simple formula – those with the highest attendance combined with the best behaviour – will be those who have the highest chances of participating.

CANAL BOATING

Canal Boating is one of our favourite residential experiences at The Boathouse Youth. Each child is kitted out with their own Buoyancy Aid, allocated a bed in a cabin with a couple of their friends and they become the boat’s crew for the duration of the trip. This means they will be required to prepare and cook their meals, keep their personal spaces and communal areas clean in addition to driving the boat and operating the locks to ensure we can navigate to our required destinations. Living aboard a boat with your peers is a great opportunity and one that almost every single young participant has thrived from. This experience is open to our Junior and Senior age-groups.

CAMPING

Camping is another BHY favourite. It’s something that our members look forward to all year-round… many work exceptionally hard to keep their attendance levels high to ensure their place on the trips! Going camping with The BHY is about two-things: Firstly, creating a ‘base’ that is central to participating in a number of outdoor pursuits activities such as Rock Climbing, Caving, Ghyll Scrambling, etc… Secondly, it’s about maintaining that ‘base’ by keeping it clean, tidy and –  of course – ensuring there is a place to prepare and cook meals to keep us all fuelled!

CYCLING

Cycling has been part of The BHY since 2012 thanks to a grant from Sport England enabling the purchase of a fleet of bikes. The BHY  has hosted cycle instruction, weekly cycling-clubs and cycling holiday clubs during the Summer Holidays. There are few better feelings than getting out into the countryside and speeding down the lanes before reaching an overnight camping destination and cooking something deliciously hot on a Trangia stove before bedding down for the night in a tent and then carrying on the next day…

DAY TRIPS

During the school-holidays, in between the Residential Experiences we love to go on day-trips. This is where we pile everyone into our minibuses and head-off to somewhere (usually somewhere really fun!) to have a great day together (because that’s what school holidays are for!). Previous destinations have included Eureka! Children’s Museum, Alton Towers, Flamingo Land, Bolton Abbey… the list goes on!
