What is DofE?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the UK’s leading Youth Achievement Award and here at The Boathouse Youth you are able to become a participant at little or no cost.

Many young people find achieving a DofE Award life-changing. A fun adventure and major challenge, three progressive Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and a wide range of activities offer endless possibilities to anyone aged 14 to 24. Millions of young people in the UK have already taken part in the world’s leading youth achievement award – pushing personal boundaries, gaining new skills and enhancing their CVs and university applications. Time to get involved and go the extra mile?

WHAT IS THE POINT?

Once you have achieved a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award it is a formal acknowledgement that you have participated in a challenging project that has required you to perform as part of a team, expand your comfort zones, learn new skills and develop yourself as a young person.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE AWARD

To achieve your award you will complete four separate sections – each one completely different. The Boathouse Youth will help and guide you through these whilst also supporting you to keep an accurate log of your accomplishments. Once all four have been completed – your receive your award.

The Boathouse Youth is a great place for everyone. When I started DOfE I wouldn’t speak to anyone, but BHY have helped me build my confidence. I have been on many trips with BHY which are extremely fun and achieved my Bronze DOfE Award. Each session is always something to look forward to – especially knowing that the leaders will be there for you every step of the way as they are all amazing. You get to experience things you would not normally. I would recommend this to everyone – so get down there!

Jasmine Pacey, Age 16DOfE Participant

My daughter is currently doing her Silver Duke of Edinburgh with the Boathouse after successfully completing Bronze with them last year. She has gained confidence, learnt life skills, made friends and has got loads of great memories for her journey through life. The staff are amazing and are definitely what makes The Boathouse what it is, which is the best youth club going!!

These 3 DOfE walks have been absolutely amazing, we’ve seen some amazing views and faced some difficulties but we’re all still here it’s been great and each day has been different, the whether has been different each day too first snow , then sunshine , the fog and wind. Thankyou for the experience, roll on our practice expedition and Snowdon.

I love working with the DOfE Groups at The Boathouse Youth because it helps young people realise their own dreams whilst I live mine, too.

THE EXPEDITION SECTION

The expedition is every participant’s favourite part of the award. It is your opportunity to really learn some new skills and experience total independence as you head-out into the countryside with your friends to navigate a route through streams, over rivers and across farmland until you reach your final destination for the evening to pitch a tent and get your hot meal for the evening cooking on the stoves.

  • Plan a route

  • Learn to Map Read

  • Use a Compass

  • Camp with your mates

THE PHYSICAL SECTION

A really important part of achieving the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is being able to demonstrate that your physical fitness has improved over a period of time. Don’t worry – we’ll do all the important recording and measurements of your fitness levels so you will just have fun participating in a variety of activities.

  • Night Walking

  • Multi-Sports

  • Competitive Games

  • The Bleep Test

THE SKILL SECTION

Officially you are allowed to choose your own skill and undertake this part of the award independently. However, we have often found this to be a barrier to a young person completing. Therefore, as a member of The Boathouse Youth’s DOfE Award Group you will automatically complete First Aid as your skill. This means you will learn life-saving knowledge and not have to worry about what you’re going to select for this section. You’ll also earn yourself a Level 2 Award in First Aid which.

If you really do not want to do First Aid and you have an alternative skill that you can demonstrate significant improvement in over time (i.e. swimming, joinery, musical instrument) then this can be discussed with your DOfE Award Leader at The BHY.

  • PERFORM CPR

  • DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING

  • TREATING WOUNDS & BLEEDING

  • CALLING FOR HELP

THE VOLUNTEERING SECTION

Prince Phillip, the actual Duke of Edinburgh, really believes that every young person should “give something back” to their community. Well, this is your opportunity. The Boathouse Youth will help you to source a Volunteering Placement – the only condition is that it must benefit people or animals. Volunteering can be a great opportunity to gain some work-experience and, in some cases, leads to a paid job after the placement has finished.
