Finance Manager

The Boathouse Youth is UK Registered Charity currently working with children and young people aged 5 to 22 (including those with special educational needs and disabilities), from socio-economically deprived communities across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, to help tackle the challenges they’re experiencing.

We have four programme areas each facilitating a variety of youth work activities to support young people’s personal, social, physical and political development. Our entire offer is fully funded and therefore free at the point of access.

Our team of highly skilled professionals interact with young people on a daily basis to deliver well thought out programmes in an engaging way. We aim to facilitate a safe space to improve mental well-being, promote positive behaviours, support educational growth and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

We are looking for an organised and reliable individual with great problem solving and teamwork skills to help us develop a small, but scalable, Finance Team. Your work will be directed by our part-time Head of Finance who works remotely, and you’ll Line Manage a part-time Finance Administrator.

In this role you will have the opportunity to work with the Board of Trustees and the CEO as a member of our Finance Sub-Committee, involving discussions about the charity’s financial strategy.

As a growing charity with around 50 (FTE) staff our aspiration is that you will thrive and develop in this essential role. You will be contributing to the transformational work of The Boathouse Youth and making a lasting difference to the lives of children and young people.

Grants & Trusts

  • Maintain records on the online management platform.
  • Manage the expenditure of restricted and unrestricted grant funds; carry out grant monitoring and reporting.
  • Supporting grant applications, for example by identifying needs and developing budgets.
  • Assist with budgets and financial forecasts.

Accounting

  • Reconcile all bank accounts.
  • Monitor sales, purchase & nominal ledgers for accuracy.
  • Update and maintain the Fixed Asset register.
  • Update and maintain cash flows.
  • Reclaim Gift Aid from HMRC (6 monthly)
  • Monitor departmental and charitable fund analysis.
  • Create and monitor budgets.
  • Act as the point of contact for HMRC, Charity Commission, Companies House and Company Pension Scheme.

Major Donors

  • Maintain records on the online management platform.
  • Support with donor engagement.
  • Ensure that invoices or alternative methods of donors making payments are issued promptly where required.

Line Management / HR

  • Line Manage the Finance Assistant providing regular support, supervision and appraisal.

Payroll

  • Oversee the payroll function including collation of staff hours, preparation of BACS transfer data, administration of auto enrolment to pension scheme, payment of tax and NI.
  • Assist with monthly management accounts and annual audits.
  • Review staff requests for reimbursement.

Business

  • Manage utilities and business rates for our premises.

Qualifications

  • Relevant financial qualification (e.g. AAT) or equivalent experience.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge and experience of charity accounts SORP, contracts and grants (e.g. restricted, unrestricted, designated funds) and accruals concepts of accounting.
  • Thorough knowledge of HMRC requirements with regards to tax, national insurance and statutory deductions of payments.
  • Experience of producing financial information and reports.
  • Knowledge of robust financial processes.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and maintaining accounting records.
  • Working knowledge of Sage.
  • Good awareness of statutory requirements relating to HR, data protection and payroll.
  • Experience of Line Management.
  • Experience of working in the charitable sector.

Skills and Attitude

  • Excellent IT skills and ability to learn new software (e.g. Donor Management).
  • Ability to work supportively across teams and build good working relationships.
  • Systematic and ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently.
  • Effective written and verbal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
